BIOVAL Selected as a UN Ocean Decade Action

Driving the Future of Sustainable Aquaculture

Published on March 21, 2026

We are proud to announce that the BIOVAL project has been officially endorsed as an Ocean Decade Action by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

Managed by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), this endorsement recognizes BIOVAL as a transformative project contributing to a sustainable, resilient, and equitable ocean economy.

As part of the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership’s second joint transnational call—a portfolio of 24 projects funded with a combined €40 million—BIOVAL has been identified for its innovative approach to marine bioresources. Our work focuses on developing microalgal biorefineries that produce functional food ingredients and aquaculture feed through sustainable, solvent-free processes.

Joining the Ocean Decade connects BIOVAL to a global network of scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders dedicated to "the science we need for the ocean we want." This recognition will amplify our impact, fostering international collaboration to protect marine biodiversity while driving economic growth.

Following our official endorsement, BIOVAL will be featured in the upcoming "Boosting Data Sharing in the Ocean Decade" webinar series. This session, titled "Blue Economy: Data and Innovation in blue food systems," is a high-level platform where we will discuss how data-driven innovation is transforming the way we produce and manage marine resources.
